Project
Otter Creek Woods

On December 20, 1994, the Harford Land Trust accepted the donation of 104 acres in fee simple from the Otter Creek Landing Limited Liability Company (Otter Creek LLC).

The principals of this development company were David E. Gonzales and Bob Ward who are now completing the residential subdivision "Otter Creek Landing" on the remaining 204 acres on Willoughby Beach Road near Edgewood.

This tract is a 104-acre deciduous woodland and associated "vernal pools", a natural community known as "flatwoods", the largest intact woodland of its kind surviving in Harford County. The vernal pools provide breeding and feeding habitat for a large number of amphibians, some reptiles, and many invertebrates.

This woodland is habitat for many bird species such as Ovenbird, Red-eyed vireo, Scarlet Tanager, Acadian Flycatcher, Hairy Woodpecker, and Kentucky Warbler.

As a woodland whose surface and subsurface waters flow directly to the Bush River, this forest is an excellent buffer of water quality of the Bush River. For all these reasons, Harford County government has designated this woodland an "Area of County Concern".

The Trust is delighted to have this property for several reasons. It is a significant natural area in its own right. Like the Stifler property on Deer Creek, these woods provide habitat for many species of interior woodland birds that are disappearing as fragmentation of their habitat prevents them from reproducing and thriving.
