Harry Webster at Raven Rock
On July 24 2006, President
Harry Webster and the owner of Raven Rock, Graham Silsby, signed a Purchase Agreement for the Trust’s acquisition of a 20-acre wooded parcel lying directly on Deer Creek in Street. We were very pleased to announce at our 2007 Celebration of Success event that this property went to settlement in October. The land is named after a large vertical rock outcropping overlooking Deer Creek passing through the property 220 feet below. “We got excited about this beautiful and varied property the minute we laid eyes on it”, said Peg Niland who, with board members Stephanie Stone and Glenn Dudderar where given a tour by Mr. Silsby one cold day last winter. As if on queue, a Kingfisher flew overhead while we walked along the creek.

The
Harford Land Trust, a local farm owner and realtor, the U.S. Army, and the Harford County government have different reasons
for wanting to preserve a parcel of farmland along Deer Creek. In 2005, those
interests converged to create a partnership that in 2007 preserved a 164-acre
farm adjacent to Deer Creek and the Churchville Test Area of the U.S. Army
Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

In 1984, John F.
Sauers of Darlington started his large 4’ by 8’ painting, “Deer Creek
in Early Spring from the Garono Farm,” and completed it in 2004. In
2005 he donated it to the Harford Land Trust (HLT) and the Deer Creek
Watershed Association (DCWA) to support their missions to protect the
natural, agricultural, scenic and cultural assets of this county. John
Sauers stipulated that the two organizations find a permanent public
home where it could receive the widest possible public exposure to
communicate the values of their land conservation work.

Who would have guessed the U.S.
Army and the Harford Land Trust
would have the same goal to protect a farm located on Deer Creek. Never would I have imagined that the two
could partner to achieve what neither could have accomplished alone. The partnership doesn’t stop there; the
project also involved Harford
County government’s
Agricultural Preservation Program to complete the land conservation project. If all goes according to schedule, 164 acres
of the Priestford LLC’s property, known as the Hopkins farm, will have two conservation
easements protecting it from development in perpetuity by mid-December.
