In 1984, John F.
Sauers of Darlington started his large 4’ by 8’ painting, “Deer Creek
in Early Spring from the Garono Farm,” and completed it in 2004. In
2005 he donated it to the Harford Land Trust (HLT) and the Deer Creek
Watershed Association (DCWA) to support their missions to protect the
natural, agricultural, scenic and cultural assets of this county. John
Sauers stipulated that the two organizations find a permanent public
home where it could receive the widest possible public exposure to
communicate the values of their land conservation work.

Who would have guessed the U.S.
Army and the Harford Land Trust
would have the same goal to protect a farm located on Deer Creek. Never would I have imagined that the two
could partner to achieve what neither could have accomplished alone. The partnership doesn’t stop there; the
project also involved Harford
County government’s
Agricultural Preservation Program to complete the land conservation project. If all goes according to schedule, 164 acres
of the Priestford LLC’s property, known as the Hopkins farm, will have two conservation
easements protecting it from development in perpetuity by mid-December.
